I'm feeling under the weather


* under the weather = (informal) slightly ill

* not be up to par = to feel a little ill or lacking in energy

* not be myself = to not feel or behave in the way usually do because you are nervous or upset




Tim : You don't look well, honey. 안색이 별로 좋아 보이지 않네.

Kate : I think I'm under the weather. 몸이 좀 좋지 않은 것 같아.

Tim : Really? I hope it's not the flu. 그래? 감기가 아니었으면 좋겠다.

Kate : I don't know, but I have a mild fever. 모르겠어. 열이 약간 있기는 해.




Tim : I'm feeling under the weather today. 오늘 몸이 좀 찌뿌딩딩하네.

Ross : You probably caught that flu that's going around. 유행성 감기에 걸린 것 같어.

Tim : You're probably right. 그런 것 같다.

Ross : You should take the day off. 너 하루 쉬어야겠다.




Ross : I'm feeling under the weather. 몸이 좋지 않아.

Mariah : In that case, why don't you call in sick today? 그러면 오늘 출근 못한다고 전화해요.




Ross : I'm not feeling up to par today. I'm afraid I've caught a cold.

오늘 몸이 별로 좋지 않아. 감기에 걸린 것 같아.

Tim : Oh, really? That's too bad. Take a good rest at home. 그래? 안됐네. 집에서 푹 쉬어.





Tim : Are you sneezing because you're catching a cold? 감기 때문에 기침하는거야?

Kate : I hope not. However, I'm not feeling myself today.

아니길바래. 근데 오늘 컨디션이 안 좋아.



eg) I've been feeling a little under par the last couple of weeks.

지난 2주전부터 컨디션이 좋지 않아.



eg) I do apologise. I haven't been feeling myself lately.

정말 미안해. 요즘 내가 제 컨디션이 아니거든.



Tim : You look unhappy about something. 무슨 좋지 않은 일이 있는 것 같네.


Ross : I'm feeling down in the dumps. 좀 우울해.

Tim : So why are you so sad? 왜 그렇게 슬퍼보여?

Ross : I just had a fight with my girlfriend. 여자 친구랑 싸웠거든.



dump 는 [쓰레기]라는 의미이지만 복수형인 dumps 는 [우울][의기소침]이라는 의미가 있습니다.

따라서 down in the dumps 라는 말은 [축 처진][울적하여]이라는 의미가 됩니다.

Kate : Hey, what is under par? 언더파가 뭐야?

Ross : Sorry, I don't know the first thing about golf. 미안. 난 골프의 "ㄱ"자도 몰라.



eg) Tim has a great knowledge of basketball, but don't know the first thing about soccer.

팀은 농구에 대해 엄청난 지식을 갖고 있지만 축구에는 완전 문외한이야.


I'm a little wet behind the ears


* wet behind the ears 는 직역하면 [귀 뒤쪽이 젖었다]는 의미이지만 본래는 [미숙한]이라는 의미...

* wet behind the ears = (informal) very young and without much experience of life





Tim : He's still wet behind the ears. He just needs to grow up.

그는 아직 서툴러. 아직 멀었어.

Ross : You said it. He's very immature. He's very hard to get along with.

맞아. 그는 풋내기이고, 잘 해내기 어려울 거야.



Tim : Care to go to snowboarding this weekend with me? You've done it before once, right?
주말에 나랑 스노우보드 타러 갈래? 전에 한번 해봤다고 그랬지?

Ross : Yes, but I'm a little wet behind the ears. I'll just take a rest at home.

응, 하지만 아직은 서툴러. 그냥 집에서 쉴래.

Tim : Someday you will be able to do it well if you try and try. Come on!

* fortune은 [큰 재산], an arm and a leg는 구어체에서 [엄청난 금액][거금]이라는 의미...

* fortune = a very large amount of money

* cost an arm and a leg / cost a pretty penny = to have a price that is too high





Ross : What a beautiful ring! 정말 아름다운 반지네!

Mariah : Isn't it? It's real diamond. 그렇죠? 진짜 다이아몬드예요.

Ross : It must cost a fortune. 엄청 비싸겠군.




Salesgirl : That dress really looks nice on you. Are you going to buy it?

그 옷 잘 어울리는데 사시겠어요?

Customer : No, I can't afford it. It costs a fortune. 아니요. 여유가 없어서요. 엄청 비싸겠네요.




Kate : It's a real beauty. I can't wait to show it to you.

그건 정말 아름다워. 빨리 네게 보여주고 싶어.

Mariah : It's really stunning. It costs a fortune. 정말 멋진데. 굉장히 비싸겠다.

제이가 사립대학에 가면 돈이 많이 깨지지 않아?

Tim : It cost me an arm and a leg. I maxed out three credit cards.

난 진짜 엄청난 비용을 지불했어. 신용 카드 세 장을 최대한도로 사용했어.



Mechanic : Looks like your transmission is shot and your radiator is over heating.
변속기가 나갔고 냉각기가 과열된 것 같네요.

Tim : How much is that going to cost me? 비용이 얼마나 들까요?

Mechanic : An arm and a leg. Actually, you'd be better off getting a new set of wheels.

상당히 들 겁니다. 솔직히, 새 차를 사시는 게 나을 겁니다.

우리 아이들을 사립학교에 보내고 싶지만, 비용이 엄청 많이 들거야.

Kate : Long-time bachelor, Ross is going to tie the knot next month.

독신주의자 로스가 다음달에 결혼할 거래.

Mariah : Well, every Jack has his Jill. 하긴 짚신도 짝이 있으니까.


* tie the knot 은 [결혼하다(= to get married)]라는 표현...


Tim : When are you goint to marry? You're already 40. 언제 결혼할거야? 벌써 40이잖아.

Ross : Don't sweat it. There's a lid for every pot. 걱정하지마. 짚신도 짝이 있어.
