생략 (Ellipsis)

 

1. 반복을 피하기 위한 생략

   God made the earth, man (made) the town

   To some life is pleasure, to others (life is) suffering

   A bird in the hand is worth two (birds) in the bush

   You may read this book if you want to (read this book)

   I went there because I wanted to (go there)

   I like you better than he (likes you)

   I like you better than (I like) him

   The weather isn't as good as (it was) last year

   A: Will it rain? B: I hope (it will) not (rain)

 

2. 관용적인 생략

   *when, while, though등이 이끄는 종속절에서

    주절과 같은 주어와 be동사는 생략된다

 

   When (she was) young, she was very beautiful

   When (you are) in Rome, do as the Romans do

   While (he was) swimming, he was drowned

   Though (I am) poor, I am satisfied

   No smoking (is allowed)

   The sooner (you do it), the better (it will be)

   (Beware of the) WET PAINT!

   (The store is) CLOSED TODAY

   (Keep your) HANDS OFF (the articles)

   (If one is) Out of sight, (one is) out of mind
