The odds are against you

Ross : Do you think I can do it? 내가 그걸 할 수 있을까?

Tim : Well, the odds are against you. 글쎄, 별로 가망성이 없어보여.

Ross : But I believe I can be successful. 하지만 난 성공할 수 있다고 믿어.

Tim : Maybe, but I don't think so. 그럴지도 모르지만 난 그렇게 생각하지 않아.



Tim : Hey, what did you just buy, Ross? Let me see. Oh, a lottery ticket.
이봐, 로스. 방금 뭘 샀어? 봐봐, 복권이네.

Why in the world did you buy that? 도대체 그걸 왜 샀어?

Ross : I'm hoping I'll win a house. 집이나 한 채 걸릴 수 있을까 해서.

Tim : Ross, just forget it. I bought those things for three years. I didn't win a cent.

로스, 다 잊어버려. 나도 3년동안 그걸 사봤는데, 단 한푼도 못 건졌어.

It's just throwing your money away. The odds are against you.

그냥 돈만 내버리는 거야. 당첨될 확률이 아주 희박해.



반대로 [가망성이 높다]라는 표현은 [확률은 너의 편이다]라는 의미에서 The odds are in your favor 라고 합니다...



Ross : Shouldn't we ask for a raise? 봉급인상을 요구하면 안될까?
Tim : I think the chances are very slim. 내 생각엔 가능성이 희박해.

That's easier said than done

* 이 표현은 [말하기는 쉽지만 실천하기는 어렵다]라는 의미...

* easier said than done = (spoken) used when it would be difficult to actually do what something has suggested



Ross : There's no way that Tim is going to quit our company.

팀이 우리 회사를 그만둘 리 없어.

Kate : Are you sure? I think his mind is made up. We'll just have to persuade him.

확실한 거예요? 그 사람 결심이 굳은 것 같던데요. 우린 그를 설득해야만 해요.

Ross : That's easier said than done. 말이야 쉽죠.



Ross : My wife says that she would divorce me if I didn't quit smoking and drinking.
내 마누라는 내가 담배와 술을 끊지 않으면 이혼하겠다네.

What would you do in my shoes? 너같으면 어떻게 할래?

Tim : I would quit smoking and drinking. 담배와 술을 끊겠어.

Ross : That's easier said than done, you know. 말하기야 쉽지.



eg) I should teat Ross like any other clent, but that's easier said than done.

로스를 다른 고객들과 마찬가지로 대해야 하는데, 말처럼 쉽지가 않아.



Kate : This problem is so difficult. 이 문제는 너무 어려워.

Tim : I can do it easily. 난 쉽게 풀 수 있는데.

Kate : Talk is cheap. Let me see you do it now. 말은 쉽지. 지금 내 앞에서 풀어봐.

Tim : Not now. But I'll do it later. 지금 말고. 나중에 할게.

 

* He's all talk and no action 이 표현도 역시 행동없이 말만 늘어놓는 사람에게 적당한 표현...

Don't burn your bridges

* burn your bridges = (informal) to do something that you cannot change, that often makes a situation difficult for you


Ross : I really hate my boss. I'm quitting tomorrow. 난 정말 상사가 싫어. 낼 그만 둘거야.

Tim : That's fine, but don't burn your bridges. 그것도 좋지만 좋게 끝내.

Ross : It's okay to tell him I don't like him. 그 사람한테 맘에 안든다고 말해도 상관없어.

Tim : But you might need a recommendation from him later.

하지만 나중에 그 사람한테 추천서를 받아야 할지 모르잖아.


eg) He really burned a lot of bridges when he quit his job like that.

그 사람은 직장을 그렇게 그만두더니 궁지에 몰리고 말았다.


Don't go to any trouble on my account


* go to a lot of trouble = use a lot of time and effort doing something carefully

Kate : Good morning, Ross. What brings you here so early? Can I make you some coffee?

안녕, 로스. 무슨 일로 이렇게 일찍 왔어? 커피 좀 줄까?

Ross : Please don't go to any trouble on my account. 나 때문에 일부러 수고할 필요없어.

I just came by to ask you what I could bring to the party tonight.

난 그냥 오늘밤 파티에 뭘 가져와야할지 물어보러 들른거야.

Kate : Don't worry about the party. Everything's been taken care of.

파티 걱정은 하지마. 모든 것이 다 준비되었어.

Why don't you sit down and have some coffee with me? I was about to make some anyhow.

앉아서 같이 커피 좀 마시는 게 어때? 지금 막 커피를 끓이려던 참이었어.



Mariah : I can give you a ride home. 집에까지 태워다줄게요.
Ross : I appreciate your offer but you don't have to go to that trouble.

제의는 고마운데 그럴 필요 없어.

eg) Thank you very much for going to that trouble. 그렇게까지 수고해주니 고마워.


Period!


* (spoken) used to say that you have made a decision and that you do not want to discuss the subject any more


Ross : I love you and I want to marry you. 난 널 사랑해. 너랑 결혼하고 싶어.
Kate : How many times should I tell you? 몇번을 말해야 해?
I don't love you and I don't want to marry you. Period!
난 널 사랑하지도 결혼하고 싶지도 않아. 더 이상 말을 꺼내지도 마!


eg) Will you stop complaining? We can't afford a luxury car yet. Period!
불평 그만해. 우린 아직 고급차를 굴릴 형편이 못돼. 그만해라.

eg) I'm not going. Period! 나 안 갈거에요. 안 간다니까요!
