My hands are tied



* 지금은 바빠서 도와줄 수 없거나, 다른 일을 할 수 없는 상황일 때 영어로는 [두 손이 묶여 있다]는 의미로 이 표현을 쓴다.

* somebody's hands are tied = cannot do what they want because of particular conditions, rules etc

* have your hands full = to be very busy or too busy [두 손에 일이 가득 차 있다]


Mariah : So, do you think that you'll be able to help me out? 저, 나 좀 도와줄 수 있어요?

Tim : I'm not sure. My hands are tied right now. 모르겠는데. 지금 나도 몹시 바빠서.

Mariah : I guess that means you can't do anything for me. 그럼 도와줄 수 없단 얘기네요.

Tim : Sorry. I'd like to help you, but I just can't. 미안해. 도와주고 싶지만 그럴 수가 없어.

Kate : We can't see Mrs. Kim these days. 요즘 김여사가 안보이네.
Mariah : No wonder. With a sick husband at home and two children to care for, she has her hands full.

놀랄일도 아니지. 집에 아픈 남편과 돌볼 아이가 둘이 있어서 바쁘거든.


eg) I have my hands full with this report. 이 보고서 때문에 몹시 바빠.


eg) You look like you have your hands full. Do you need some help?

매우 바쁘신가 봐요. 좀 도와드릴까요?


eg) I'm sorry I can't help. I have my hands full with problems at home.

도울 수 없어서 미안해. 집안 문제로 바쁘거든.






How long has it been?



David : How long has it been, Tim? 얼마 만이야. 팀?

Tim : I haven't seen you in months. 몇 달 동안 널 보지 못했어.

David : Nice to see you again. 다시 만나서 기쁘다.

Tim : Same here. 나도 동감이야.


Ross : Hi, Tim. How long has it been? How have you been?
안녕, 팀. 이게 얼마만이냐? 어떻게 지냈어?

Tim : Keeping myself busy. 바쁘게 지냈지.





I haven't seen you in a while



Ross : I haven't seen you in a while. What's to pay? 오랜만이야. 무슨 일 있었어?

Tim : I've been around. Nothing new is happening. 여기 저기 돌아다녔어. 별 일은 없어.


Tim : I haven't seen you in years, but you haven't changed at all.
이게 몇 년만이야, 그런데 너 하나도 안 변했다.

Mariah : Thanks, neither of you. 고마워요, 오빠도 그대로야.


Tim : Look who's here! 이게 누구야!

Kate : I haven't seen you for ages! 정말 오랜만이야.

Tim : You haven't changed a bit. 너 하나도 안 변했다.

Kate : Neither have you. It seems like the older you grow, the better you look.

너도 마찬가지야. 넌 나이를 먹을수록 얼굴은 더 좋아지는 것 같아.

Tim : I can say the same thing about you. 너도 그런데 뭐.


Ross : Long time no see. 오랜만이야.

Kate : I haven't seen you for centuries. How have you been?

정말 오랜만이다. 그동안 어떻게 지냈니?

Ross : Keeping busy. 바빴지.

Kate : That's great. 그거 다행이네.





It's been a long time



Ross : Hello, Mariah. 안녕, 마리아.

Mariah : Hi, Ross. It's been a long time. 안녕, 로스. 오랜만이다.

Ross : Yes. The last time we met was in May. 그래. 마지막으로 만난 게 5월이었어.

Mariah : I guess it was. 그랬을거야.

Ross : How's everything with you? 어떻게 지내?

Mariah : About the same. 늘 그렇지 뭐.

It's been a while It's been so long 도 같은 의미.






Long time no see



* long time no see (spoken) used to say hello when you have not seen someone for a long time

* Hello, stranger! = (spoken) used to greet someone you have not seen for a long time


Ross : Hey, Tim! Long time no see. 어이. 팀! 오랜만이야...

Tim : How are you? What are you doing in Seoul? 잘 있었어? 서울에서 뭘 하고 지내?

Ross : That's a long story. Are you free now? We can talk about it over a cup of coffee.

얘기하자면 길어. 지금 시간 있어? 커피나 한잔하면서 얘기하지.



Kate : What a pleasant surprise running into you! 뜻밖에 만나니 반갑다!

Ross : Long time no see. How have you been? 오랜만이다. 어떻게 지냈어?


Tim : Well, if it isn't Ross! Long time no see. What are you up to these days?

야, 이거 로스 아닌가! 정말 오랜만일세. 요즘 뭘하고 지내는가?

Ross : Oh, I'm still at the English Institute. What have you been up to?

아, 난 아직도 영어학원에 있네. 자네는 그동안 뭘 했나?

eg) Hello, stranger! = You're quite a stranger! 아이구, 이 사람 참 오랜만이군!
