* 이 표현의 의미는 상대방의 생각이나 내 생각이나 다를 바가 없다는 의미로 [네가 모르는 걸 나라고 어떻게 알겠니?][나도 모르는 건 마찬가지야]라는 의미...

* (spoken) used to tell someone that you do not know any more than they do about something


Ross : What time does the movie start? 영화가 몇시에 시작해?

Kate : Your guess is as good as mine. 나도 몰라.

Ross : Maybe we should call the movie theater. 극장에 전화해 보는 게 좋겠다.

Kate : That's a good idea. 좋은 생각여...

Tim : Who do you suspect spilled the beans about our surprise party?
누가 우리 깜짝파티를 누설했지?

Ross : Your guess is as good as mine. 나도 몰라.


* spill the beans = (informal) to tell something that somone else wanted you to keep a secret

* beats me = (spoken) used to say that you cannot understand or explain something

* search me = (spoken) used to tell someone that you do not know the answer to a question

Tim : Hey. Didn't you see the green file I just put on the desk?

Ross : No. I've just come back from my tea break. 아니. 난 차 미시고 지금 막 들어왔는데.

Jay : Beats me! Can't you see I'm putting my nose into this bunch of files?

Jay : Take a moment to think on it. Are you sure you didn't put it elsewhere?

잘 생각해봐. 다른 곳에 놓고 그러는 거 아냐?


Tim : Do you know why Ross has been absent for four days?
로스가 왜 4일씩이나 결석하는지 알아?

Mariah : Beats me. He's never been absent before.

전혀 모르겠네요. 전에는 한번도 결석한 적이 없었는데.
Kate : Honey, what happened to our TV? 여보, 우리 TV 어떻게 된거야?
Tim : Beats me! I came home and found the window broken, and the TV was gone.

몰라! 집에 와보니까 창문이 깨져 있고, TV가 없더라.


Tim : Which would you prefer, going to the movies or going to a baseball game?

영화구경하고 야구시합구경하고 어느 것이 더 좋니?

Kate : Search me! Can't we do both? 모르겠네. 둘 다 하면 안돼나?

Tim : No, we can't. Take your pick. 안 돼. 하나만 골라 잡아 봐.

Kate : In that case, I think a baseball game beats the movies.

이런 경우에는, 야구시합구경이 영화구경보다는 낫지.

Tim : All right. Let's go to the sports complex and watch a baseball game.

좋아. 종합운동장에 가서 야구시합 구경하자.

* not have a clue = (informal) to know nothing at all about the answer to a question or about how to do something

* have no idea = to not know at all

Ross : Did you ask Tim about the answer? 팀에게 해답을 물어봤어?

Kate : Yes, but he doesn't have a clue. 응, 하지만 걔도 전혀 모른데.

Ross : Really? He doesn't know? 정말? 걔도 몰라?

Kate : That's right. I don't know what to do now. 응, 이제 어떻게 해야할 지 모르겠어.


Tim : Look what you've done here! You never have a clue, do you?

네가 여기에 해 놓은 것 좀 봐라! 넌 전혀 감을 못 잡고 있지, 그렇지?

Ross : Hey, don't say like you know everything. I did my best.

야, 넌 다 아는 것처럼 말하지 마. 난 최선을 다했다구.



Kate : You don't know what I go through. You don't have a clue.

너는 내가 뭘 겪는지 몰라. 너는 짐작도 못해.

Tim : What do you go through? 니가 뭘 겪어?


Tim : Do you know how to switch this machine off? 이 기계 작동을 멈추게 하는 법을 아니?

Karen : I'm afraid I haven't got a clue. 전혀 모르겠는데요.


eg) Don't ask me. 'Cause I don't have any clue. 나한테 물어보지마. 난 아무것도 모르니까.

* be new to somebody = not recognized or not experienced before

* that's a new one on me = (spoken) used to say that you have never heard a particular word, name etc before

Ross : I heard that you're in charge of ordering the soccer uniforms.

축구 유니폼 주문을 니가 맡았다며?

Tim : Well, that's news to me. 글쎄, 난 금시초문인데.


eg) The fruit had a delicate taste that was completely new to me.

그 과일은 내가 전혀 경험해 보지 못한 미묘한 맛을 지니고 있어.
